Museums and galleries becoming new fashion destinations

Fashion lovers have recently been delighted to see that many fashion brands have been digging out their old collections to display in museums and galleries. Even the public with less interest in fashion have been seen to be taking an interest in its history.

A recent retrospective collection put together by Hussein Chalayan was so popular that it was extended and the British designer commented, “The very fact that these exhibitions are so popular shows that fashion is very much a part of a country’s culture, a fact that these exhibitions make sure isn’t forgotten.”

A recent show has also been put together by Ralph Lauren which attracted over 150,000 visitors to its location in Paris. A similar exhibition by Jean-Paul Gaultier attracted over 170,000 visitors and it has been announced that it will be running for a second time. In Moscow an even more successful exhibition was hosted by Dior with nearly a quarter of a million people attending.

With the success of these first few exhibitions many more fashion houses are keen to jump on the bandwagon and there are many shows scheduled for 2012. Max Mara will also be holding an exhibition in Moscow which is starting this January. A special exhibition is being held in London which is designed to be a tribute to the style of James Bond and is going to be taking place at the Barbican and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

In Venice Diana Vreeland is going to be honoured with a retrospective exhibition featuring only pieces designed by her. New York will see exhibitions by Elsa Schiaparellia as well as Miuccia Prada. Perhaps the biggest addition to the world of fashion exhibitions is going to be a permanent museum which is being established in Florence this year.

Stella McCartney one-off London show in February

Stella McCartney has been associated with Paris Fashion Week and for the last 10 years this is where she has decided to show off her new collections. However, the fashion designer has recently said that she might be returning to London Fashion Week by having a one-off show in the capital city in February.

She recently commented at an award ceremony in London, “Returning to London Fashion Week is something I’m always thinking about and I’m very much looking forward to having a show in the city in February.”

The creative director of Alexander McQueen is Sarah Burton and she has been honoured with the highest award for fashion designers in the UK at the British Fashion Awards which took place recently. She was given the designer of the year award and she said, “This has been a fantastic year for me and I’m delighted to have received this award.”

Another recipient of the awards was Victoria Beckham who was recognised by being given the designer brand of the year award. She was so overwhelmed that she was reduced to tears and she dedicated the award to her family.

Upon receiving the award she said, “Receiving this award is a dream for me, it is something that I’ve wanted for a very long time and I’m delighted that I finally managed to achieve this dream.”

Victoria Beckham has been designing clothes since 2008 and she has won over the fashion world with her elegant and simple designs. The label made a profit of over £15 million in the first three months of the year.

One of the most unusually dressed people at the show was Kate Moss, and while she is known for drawing attention with her outfits, this one drew attention for all the wrong reasons. It was clear she was hoping that her rock chic outfit would look glamorous but it ended up making her look rather grungy.

Other people who gained attention for all the wrong reasons were Kelly Brook and Abbey Clancy, whose over the top dresses and fake tans made them look rather out of place next to the high society of fashion.

Alexa Chung was at the other end of the spectrum and her outfit was the highlight of the evening as she wore a wonderful dress designed by Christopher Kane. Georgia May Jagger also wore an outfit of note.

Versace sees huge High Street crowds

It seems that in the consumer world, the popularity of a product can be judged by how long people are willing to queue to get it. When the iPhone was first released in 2007 a man queued for over 100 hours inNew Yorkto be the first person to get their hands on it. Last year people were seen to queue for over 20 hours to get a signed copy of the Cheryl Cole book.

Recent collections by H&M have been created by top designers such as Donatella Versace. A queue started forming outside the high-street retailer’s flagship store inRegent Streetat five o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, ready for the opening on Thursday morning. There was a huge amount of fanfare surrounding the announcement of the designer collections to be on sale at H&M, even a concert with Prince was held inNew Yorkas part of the launch party.

The collection by Versace at H&M is able to give people a taste of real luxury designs at a very reasonable price. In a surprise for those who had been waiting in queues for such a long time, Donatella Versace herself appeared at the opening, walking towards the store on a pink carpet having stepped from a Maserati.

She was wearing a dress from the collection which costs £200, which is about 10 times less than the equivalent dress from the Saatchi’s main collection would cost. This is the first of two collections by Versace for H&M on the second of the two will come on sale in January.

Most of those who turned up at the store to take advantage of the designer label at a good price were young and all of them have a keen interest in fashion. Shoppers were only allowed in the store for a 10 minute window each.

Girls Day Out Scotland

The biggest beauty and fashion exhibition in Scotland is known as Girls Day Out. The event has been organised by three men, and with 20,000 women attending the event these guys are probably envied by most of the male population of the country.

One of these men is Dylan Brittain, and he is the owner of Rainbow Room International. This is a salon in Glasgow, which is caters to many famous stars including Florence and The Machine and Tinie Tempah. He has said that the event brings a great satisfaction and he enjoys bringing his salon to the event.

He has commented, “My salon is a great way for women to come in and transform how they look, it is fantastic to see how the work that I do boosts their confidence so significantly.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky to tour the world going to fashion shows and catwalks. I actually started work as a joiner, but I quickly realised that was not where my passion lay and I became a hairdresser. Now, 17 years later, I am lucky enough to have a big staff of loyal employees and have over 20,000 clients. I’m truly passionate about what we do.”

The event director of Girls Day out is Tom Lovering. Essentially, he is the man that makes it all happen, and is responsible for bringing people into the stalls at the show and ordering enough champagne. He has commented, “I am responsible for marketing, managing, and the production of the whole event. It is a hard task, and transforming an empty space into an event that will be loved is immensely challenging.

“Seeing it all begin to come together is very satisfying however, seeing how much people enjoy the show makes it all worthwhile.” Tom’s history is in events management and he started this event in 2009.

The Pride of Britain Awards everyone is wearing Victoria Beckham

The Pride of Britain Awards were recently held and they were hosted by the Daily Mirror. The annual event, which is sponsored by Littlewoods, saw many of the A-list attend and they were seen wearing clothes designed by Victoria Beckham. A huge range of people were wearing the clothes by the designer, from Cameron Diaz to Cheryl Cole.

Recently, Beckham has released a collection of items that are very figure hugging. Four years ago, Beckham was not even on the fashion scene and no one could have predicted that today she would be where she is now: rivalling some of the largest fashion houses.

The designs by Beckham are wildly expensive, dresses start at over £1000 and go all the way up to £7000. She has however recently launched a new range which is intended to be more affordable although the cheapest item is still £400. Her clothes have been such a success that she has had up production significantly.

The hardest market that she had to break was the US. While in the UK the brand name of Beckham was already well known, in the US it was not. It is hard work and talent that has brought Victoria to the prominent position that she now has in the fashion world.

London Fashion Week Men’s Day

London Fashion Week ends it show with Men’s Day, where clothing collections for men are shown off and for many at the show it is quite a relief. The women’s shows are full of glamour and some find this a bit tiresome, the gossip and the glitz are usually a bit over the top. When it comes to the men’s day though there is a much simpler attitude that says: let’s just get on with it. Let us have a look at some of the highlights of the men’s clothes that were at the show.

Sports is on the minds of designers and this very much shown through a large amount of the clothes that are on show at the event. This must be attributed to the coming of the Olympic Games next summer. We can see sporty bomber jackets from Lou Dalton and see some great jogging bottoms from Christopher Shannon.

A collection that was a bit more subtle was that of E Tautz which had an element of early 20^th century sports where athletes would dress in what they felt was comfortable, before the advent of modern sports clothes. This meant the collection saw some interesting items in wool and linen. There were also some great blue silk jackets rounding off the collection.

While these were collections for next summer the predominant colours seemed to be darker than what you would expect. There were some exceptions with some neon t shirts and pink trousers, but most of the collections utilised darker colours. The collection by Dalton was actually primarily making use of black. The collection by Top Man was something a bit different and many of the designs had come from Morocco. There were several shirts made out of silk with Ikat prints on them.

Cavalli opens a brand new shop on Sloan Street

As part of London Fashion Week celebrations, Cavalli opened a brand new shop on Sloan Street. There were two parties going on in the area as across the street, Fendi were also celebrating the opening of their new store. The two parties were very different affairs. Fendi’s was a quiet affair with civilised conversation and demonstrations of how the clothes are made. The Cavalli party was quite different as it was packed with people with dark tans and women wearing leopard print and oversized diamonds.

Roberto Cavalli commented about the opening, “Fendi used to be in this shop but it was too much space for them. We used to be in theirs and it was too small, so we simply swapped locations.” Even with the new, larger, location is seemed as if there was not enough room for all the guests who were keen to get into the event.

Many celebrities and fashion icons turned up for the event. Wearing a Cavalli kaftan, Bianca Jagger arrived and in a brief interview she commented about her choice of perfume, “I don’t want to be wearing the same scent as anyone else, I want something unique, so I mix my own blend of scents.”

The second part of the celebration was held at Battersea Power Station where there was a dinner being held. Everything about the event was extravagant, from the long red tunnel you had to pass down to enter the dining area, to the tables of exquisite food prepared by Locanda Locatelli. The party was incredibly glitzy and many people commented about the extent of the decorations.

The evening included dancing and Kelis gave a performance of some of her greatest hits, including ‘Trick Me’ and ‘Milkshake.’ The party was so busy and so many people dancing that the floor was moving, and some of the guests who had arrived in high heels were struggling to keep up with how fast the crowd was moving. For those who did not want to dance there was also a wonderful outdoor terrace where guests could soak up some of the atmosphere of the crumbling power station.

Tom Ford a soft lighting fan

The famous designer Tom Ford knows that as one gets older, low lighting can be key to looking good. It is no surprise then that his sumptuous office in London is very low lit and visitors will often find that they struggle to see the man sitting across from them.

Ford is known for his constant self-improvement and taking exceptional care to look good at all times. He is almost always seen in a smart suit and sometimes wears a waistcoat. Ford comes from Texas in the United States, but has been living in England for some time. As someone who has a self-confessed love of the country he describes wearing a suit as, “essential, because everyone here wears a suit all the time.” Many people think that he is too formal, but Ford disagrees.

The man will be feeling good this week as he has just been nominated to receive the ‘Brand of the Year’ award from the British Fashion Awards. Ford has lived in England for around a decade after he brought the Gucci offices to London in the 1990′s.

Tom Ford was responsible for building the Gucci brandsubstantially. When he first came to the company it was Britain where he looked for designers first. He found them and brought their brands and designs under the Gucci conglomerate. Notable people in his recruitment were Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney.

One of the highlights of London Fashion Week is going to be a presentation by Ford, which is sure to be characteristically perfectly put together. He has also described ‘The Only Way is Essex’ as being one of the highlights of the year for culture.

Ford has recently launched a film to much acclaim, and some have said that this is going to detract from his work in the fashion world. About this he has commented, “This is untrue, I have spent much of the summer working on a new cosmetics range. While I very much enjoy designing clothes, cosmetics is something that I get really passionate about. I can spend days just working to get the colour of one product just right.”

J Crew at New York Fashion Week

J Crew will be hosting its first ever catwalk show during New York Fashion Week. Firm favourites with Oprah Winfrey and the US First Lady, Michelle Obama, J Crew will be on centre stage during the event. This was announced yesterday when Mercedes-Benz (sponsor of the event) released the schedule.

Several other labels will join J Crew at the event next month including, Michael Kors, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, who will present their collections for the spring and summer of 2012. A spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz, Lisa Hollada informed NBC news in New York that, “the variation of designers really shows that Fashion Week is a stage for the industry to show both well-established designers as well as those who are up and coming in the business.

J Crew hires some of the best models in the world for its campaigns and come September this catwalk promises to be the best attraction at the New York Fashion Week. Currently, Arizona Muse features in J Crew’s latest catalogue, with other equally famous models doing the swimwear. The upcoming catalogue will feature Jacquelyn Jablonski and Liu Wen. The talent used in the catalogues bodes very well for the sort of names we will be seeing on the catwalk.

J Crew is currently working on its major UK expansion and we will be sure to be seeing more of its affordable priced clothes hitting our stores soon. The label has seen its image transformed by Jenna Lyons, the director of creativity at the label who has held the position for less than a year.

The US celebrity Oprah Winfrey is often seen wearing J Crew and has, by her own admission, been inspired by Michelle Obama who often is seen wearing the label for public appearances and at other events.

Samantha Cameron Fashion Ambassador

The Primer Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron will be in Glasgow to attend the Scottish Fashion Awards. She announced she will attend the awards ceremony at the Glasgow Science Centre as part of her role as British Fashion Council Ambassador. Also Mrs. Cameron will be presenting the Designer of the Year award for the Scottish Fashion Awards. Nominees include Holly Fulton, Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders.

Founded in 2006 by Tessa Hartmann the Scottish Fashion Awards are celebrating their sixth year with awards for retailers, models and designers from Scotland. She expressed her pleasure in traveling to Scotland for the awards in her capacity as the British Fashion Council’s Ambassador.

She added how the awards celebrate Scotland’s very best in fashion and reminds everyone that Scotland is not only home to great inspiration designers but also a great textile industry. As part of her role with the British Fashion Council she will attend the event but also meet with a number of the fashion creators in Scotland as well as designers and business innovators.

She worked as creative director for an upmarket stationery company called Smythson until 2010 and still does consulting work for them twice a week. Ms. Hartmann said she was excited to host Mrs. Cameron for the event and that they are delighted Samantha could make it and meet the rising fashion stars and industry leaders.

The nominations and special awards for the Scottish Fashion Awards sixth annual event that takes place in association with Swarovski and Vogue.com were announced in April. This year’s nominees include Louise Gray, Jonathan Saunders, as well as houses Harris Tweed Hebrides and Mackintosh.
