Stella McCartney returns to London Fashion Week

In celebration of the Olympics, Stella McCartney has returned to London Fashion Week which is going to be taking place between the 17th and 22 February this year.

The fashion week sees the most influential names in fashion come to the UK to show off their latest collections and enjoy the catwalk shows. It is expected that Stella McCartney is going to be one of the highlights of the event as she showcases a special collection.

The daughter of Sir Paul McCartney has designed the sports kits by Adidas that is going to be worn by the team from Great Britain during this year’s Olympics. This is not the only high-profile activity that she has been involved in this year either, as she is also set to launch a new perfume.

As well as these new products she is set to open a second store in the capital city which is going to be in Brompton Cross. She is not remaining in London for long though and returns to Paris to show off her winter collection in March.

The diffusion line by Alexander McQueen, McQ, is also going to get some exposure at the fashion event in London and it is expected this is going to generate a significant amount of interest before the new store in London is opened in the spring. This year’s fashion week is sponsored by Vodafone which has been involved with the event for three seasons.

With London hosting the Olympics and the importance of London fashion week, this is going to be a very important year for the capital city. Asda takes George into the Middle Eastern market

Asda, the British arm of U.S. retailer Wal-Mart, is taking George to the Middle East. A franchise deal has been signed with the Lebanese company Azadea Group that will expand the budget clothing brand to an as yet undisclosed number and location of stores to be opened in 2012.

In another agreement, Asda has made a deal with Sandpiper, a Channel Island-based company, to take the George franchise to Guernsey and Jersey. Again, there are no details as to the number and location of pilot stores, but customer response is expected to be strongly positive.

The second largest UK retailer behind Tesco, Asda reported last year that the company was looking to expand overseas with a few pilot stores. George clothing brand accounts for about half of all Asda’s sales of general merchandise, and the brand is already global, with Wal-Mart stores in seven countries carrying a large variety of George clothing and accessories.

All of the parties concerned have expressed enthusiasm for the partnerships. The executive managing director of George, Andrew Moore, said that customers all over the world are in the market for more affordable, quality merchandise, and working with two large and respected franchise businesses will provide just what those customers are looking for.

The chief executive of Sandpiper, Tony O’Neill, said his company was pleased to be part of the global expansion of the George franchise, as the brand is well known for quality and value. He referred to the brand as “award-winning” and “customer-winning” due to its popular designs and reasonable prices.

Azadea Group’s CO Said Dahar made similar comments, saying that they’re excited about the launch and sure that George will be a welcome addition for their Middle Eastern customers.

Asda has already put together a team at their base in Lutterworth to develop the new partnerships and establish, build and maintain the franchise in the planned new locations.

While much of the world is suffering from a recession, Ozwalk Boateng, a top fashion designer in menswear, is expanding his business. Having been in talks with both banks and investors, he could garner £150 million of investment in order to open up to 100 shops all over the world.

The cost of each store will run to somewhere in the region of £1.5 million, and will operate in a franchise model. One of the first to open will be in London, with Sloane Street being considered, and it could arrive as soon as 12 months. Paris, one of the homes of fashion, is also being considered.

Mr Boateng has been suiting the stars since the 90s, with a number of celebrity clients such as Mick Jagger and Jude Law. His business operates primarily from his store on Savile Row, and he is leader in the male fashion industry. While based in the UK, his business reaches across the world.

He had seven shops in Japan, and when their economy hit a crisis in the 90s, his business suffered. Since then, he has always been a lot more cautious about the development of his company, and plans to be more hands on as this expansion takes place to avoid being hurt by a similar crisis.

If everything goes according to plan, then his profits, before tax and interest, will go from just over £1 million pounds a year to over £70 million, in just 5 years. Mr Boateng has said that he would like to have a global brand, similar to Louis Vuitton, and is aware that Bernard Arnault, who is the chairman and CEO of LVMH, made a fortune from fashion, and is one of the richest men in Europe.

Mila Kunis new at Dior

Mila Kunis is the newest celebrity to join the model collection for Dior as the 28 yea old actress is the new model for the Miss Dior handbag. Dressed in black, the petite actress that was born in the Ukraine is seen gently holding the handbag in the campaign photos.

For Kunis, this is a major achievement as she describes herself as more of a jeans and shirt kind of girl, so for someone that is not known for her fashion sense at home the chance to appear in a Dior high fashion advert is quite astonishing. She remarked in an interview that she is still learning about fashion, but that she enjoys wearing feminine pieces while walking down the red carpet.

She also stated that she likes the Dior house because it feels very grounded to her and that their work is always feminine, sophisticated, and beautiful which likely means we can expect to see her dressed at least once, if not more, in the label over the course of the next awards season.

It seems only natural that she would be drawn to the label as her previous partners in film, and producers, seem to feel the same way about the small and stunning star who is starting to see her career in film take off after a long hiatus following her role on That Seventies Show.

Hugo Boss to open Hogo boutique

Hugo Boss has recently announced that it will be opening a boutique for its other brand, Hugo. Currently the German fashion company has over 40 stores in the United Kingdom and it is expected that this new shop will be launching in the South Molton Street area of London.

Hugo is targeted towards fashion that is more style led and currently all of the designs are being sold within existing Hugo Boss stores. This is the only store that is going to be selling clothes only from Hugo. Bernd Hake is the managing director at Hugo Boss in the UK and he has recently said, “London is the key focus for Hugo Boss and we are soon going to be opening a new store located in Covent Garden. We find that Hugo Boss products sell best in metropolitan cities and every year many tourists come to shop in London and this figure is going to be even higher next year as the Olympic Games are taking place in the city.”

Recent figures released by the company have shown that this year the sales of Hugo Boss clothes in the UK increased by nearly 40%. The company also said that they expect this kind of growth to be continuing throughout 2012. Currently only 10% of the company’s sales are in womenswear and they have recently announced that they are going to be expanding their offering in this area. The Chief Executive has stated that in the next three years there will be a womenswear Hugo Boss shop in London.

Valentino online fashion museum

Valentino, the Italian fashion designer has recently come up with a new way to display his collections; virtually. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway have helped launch the online museum during a press conference that was held at the New York Museum of Modern Art.

Anne Hathaway said at the event, “Valentino has managed to create something that has previously never existed and this is a revolution in the way that clothes will be displayed and it will also mark a turning point in the way that people experience museums.”

In the virtual museum, browsers will be able to see over 300 creations from Valentino and they can all be viewed in 360°. The designer officially retired three years ago but since then has still involved in the company and says that he has plenty of creativity left to offer to his brand, despite him being nearly 80 years old.

Valentino commented, “I still love to draw and design and I’m still a very creative person. I think that this virtual museum is a real way to show off the creativity of my fashion brand.”

Hugh Jackman was also at the press conference and he has said, “I’m a huge fan of Valentino and the clothes he creates are wonderful on every level. On a personal level he is a very generous man and has a great heart. An example of this is in the museum itself and there is no charge to access it and he really is just happy for people to see his work.”

Stretching earlobes is becoming the new tattoo

Stretching earlobes is something that goes back a long way and it is something that is becoming increasingly popular on the street. Many people associate stretching earlobes with the more remote places in the world but it is actually something that has been done in Western countries for some time.

Many people, when they first see a stretched earlobe, probably think it is a little bit strange but for the people who have had it done it is something that they see as beautiful.

On BBC Masterchef stretched earlobes have come to the attention of viewers because one of the contestants has significantly stretched ears. They have a piece of metal in them which allows people to see straight through the lobe. Another celebrity who is wearing what are known as ‘flesh tunnels’ is one of the members of boy band McFly. He is currently in the public eye because he is appearing on the ITV show, ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.’

Statistically it is very hard to see whether earlobe stretching is on the rise. Generally information is not recorded and mostly people have to rely on anecdotal evidence. It does seem however, when you look at the public, that the trend is on the rise. There is also an increasing amount of jewellery available in shops for people with stretched earlobes, suggesting there is an increased market.

Many places that pierce ears have said that in the last few years the number of people coming in for earlobe stretching has greatly increased. Marcus Mellor pierces ears in Manchester and he has recently stated, “Stretching ears used to be associated with the rock crowd and hippies but now it is something that is being embraced by all levels of society. Everyone from middle-aged men to young girls are considering getting their ears stretched.”

Alix Fox writes for the UK magazine, Bizarre and said, “It is much easier to find a reputable person to stretch is these days as it is something that is entering the mainstream. As places become more popular people feel more confident in using them knowing that they are clean and hygienic.”

Professor Victoria Pitts Taylor has written about body modification and she has said that it is used by people to set themselves apart from others. She has commented, “In the last few years more people have become attracted to this practice and it is entering the mainstream, we are even starting to see celebrities and models who are stretching their earlobes. There are people who want the practice to remain as part of the subculture rather than in the mainstream.”

There are two main ways to stretch earlobes. The first involves a lot of patience as the earlobes are gradually stretched over time, the second way is a more immediate procedure called dermal punching, when essentially a whole is punched through the skin.

Mellor says that he encourages his customers to do the slow option, he says, “This takes a much longer time and generally people can hope to stretch their earlobes by around 1 mm every month. Skin stretching is a slow process and it is something that should not be forced. If you do it too quickly you are going to get an uneven stretch and it can also be quite painful.

Norway gets tough on air brushed models

A government minister from Norway has decided to wage war on air brushed images of fashion models and declared that in a bid to tackle the ever increasing numbers of young girls suffering from eating disorders the images should come with the kind of health warnings that appear on cigarette packets.

Equalities minister Audun Lysbakken has said that seeing adverts everywhere featuring super skinny models are causing young girls and women to starve themselves in order to achieve an unrealistic perfect body. He is calling for stark warnings to appear on all press adverts and posters when a photo has been airbrushed.

One of the texts that have been suggested for the warnings is that the ‘advertisement has been altered and that it shows an inaccurate picture of how the model really looks’. Mr Lysbakken says that hundreds of thousands of girls and women are suffering from eating disorders and are living with distorted self images as the valiantly try to achieve the same image as these digitally enhance models are conveying.

His call comes in the wake of countries including Brazil, Italy and Spain clamping down on the use of skinny models at catwalk shows. Spain has gone as far as banning all models from fashion shows in Madrid that fall below a set body mass index, and Italy are now demanding that the participants in their fashion shows have health certificates. Brazil is considering the demands that underweight models be banned from catwalks.

Medical experts from around the globe have long warned about the danger of catwalk models being super skinny, and of airbrushing pictures to make the models appear to be a lot thinner than they actually are, as they say these images are encouraging anorexia in girls as young as six.

The style of Anne Hathaway

Every time Anne Hathaway makes an appearance, the average person goes green with envy. Besides being beautiful in a delicate way she has a flawless style. No model shows off a long red gown in the same way as Anne Hathaway.

She has never had any difficulty choosing her outfits for the many Hollywood functions she attends. Her wardrobe first came to people’s attention when she paraded outfits in the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. Her off screen dressing became noticeable during this period as well.

She wears delicate feminine dresses with assurance and the clothes do full justice to her statue like figure. Her numerous bright red and sequined fishtail dresses and strapless gowns ensure that she stands out in a crowd and should be taken seriously.

True to form, Anne, who looked even more stunning, wore a Valentino designed silver and white dress to the White Fairy Tale Love Ball. This floor length skirt was edged with shimmering sequins. The best accessory was her tiara, custom made by Stephen Jones.

Despite her portrayal of unattractive characters on the film screen, similar to her latest part in One Day, Anne Hathaway has come a long way looking every inch the fairytale princess with her ethereal looks.

A fan of floor sweeping gowns, Mila Kunis, has been receiving a lot of attention for her fashion sense. She has come a long way since her part in the series, That ‘70s Show having now starred in many films, including Black Swan, where she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Lily.

Mila is often seen in amazing gowns at her numerous, eye catching red carpet appearances, a number of them being designed by Versace, Ellie Saab and Givenchy. She loves colour whether it be bold shades of scarlet or emerald green and also looks good in the pale, pastel shades. She manages to look incredibly chic in classic black and white.

She does not choose to wear prints as she prefers to show off the cut of the garment together with the embellishments of thigh high slits, flounces, ribbon belts and accessorising with jewellery to finish the look.

Wearing a sophisticated red dress from the Lanvin Resort collection Mila showed off her slender figure at the Friends with Benefits premiere alongside co-star, Justin Timberlake. The eye catching pencil skirt and off the shoulder neckline ensured an elegant look while keeping it simple, with the colour accentuating her bronzed skin.
