Suspender sales are steadily increasing as top women celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue continue to wear them in public. The combination of suspenders and warmer weather has also helped boost their popularity according to High Street retailer, Debenhams.
In addition, the retail store stated that the most in demand suspenders were black belts with sequins, embroidery, and bows with sales reaching an increase of almost 238% over just the past month. In fact, the store was forced to change its buying patterns in order to meet the sudden surge in customer demand.
Experts say that the increased demand for this type of lingerie, which is now challenging tights, is similar to the same demand of the clothing market in the 1960’s. It was during this time period that women first left behind suspenders and stockings and instead chose self-supporting tights.
Debenhams spokeswoman, Ruth Attridge, stated that as weather becomes more unpredictable, tights have also increased in popularity. She also attributed their rise to the many stars now wearing the underwear as outerwear such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, and Rihanna.
According to Attridge, the British summer began traditionally with spurts of sun and rain throughout the same day leaving women unsure of what to wear making suspenders and stockings the perfect alternative given they offer coverage but breath much better than tights making them comfortable for wear in City offices.
