All UK wardrobes should include jeans and a leather jacket

British style is something that is desired all around the world and one of the most popular items that makes it big abroad as British jackets. This is probably because the country receives such miserable weather that people tend to have several of these items in their wardrobe. Leather jackets are particularly popular item in the UK and wearing them will add a certain British twist to any outfit.

If you are looking to develop a rock chick look then you should also consider purchasing a pair of skinny jeans. Jeans are something that appear in almost everyone’s wardrobe and there are many different styles which you can choose to wear. For many people, skinny jeans go very well with a leather jacket and it is also possible to tie is in with a pair of Converse shoes.

Jeans are an item that most people were very often and for this reason it is probably worth investing a bit more money in them as they will need to be more resilient and clothes you wear less often. There are some companies that offer great quality jeans at reasonable prices, and these are not necessarily the most high-end brands. It is important that you find something that looks good on you, is durable but is also suited to your budget.

Another important element of British style is risk-taking, and many people in the UK will test out unusual fashions just to see if they work. Of course, this does sometimes end up a mistake, but in general it ends up looking quirky.

Spring 2012 fashion trends

When looking at Spring 2012 fashion trends, there are the obvious and mandatory pastel and floral designer dresses, but there are also designers who have taken the expected and delivered a fresh new creative perspective. MaxStudio’s spring line features a collection of dresses that are unique enough for the runway, but cheap and practical enough for a night out with your girlfriends.

One of the most striking themes in their collection is their banded dresses. This dress looks soft, the design flowing silk that creates interest with the bands that criss-cross over the bodice in all the right places, resulting in a look that is both structured and whimsical. The best description for tit would be: Marilyn Monroe meets 2012. For a smoother look, you can also find simple black dresses, with the bands dangling off the side, adding a hip, contemporary flair.

Another distinguishing mark in this collection is the over-the-shoulder design and open backs. These featured dresses show some skin in the most feminine way, without being too revealing. The soft, layered fabric adds luxury without going overboard, you couldn’t be more glamorous! If you don’t fancy pastels colours this time of year, there are plenty of black dresses to choose from. If you don’;t shy away from colours, try their bright-coloured dresses in orange or yellow. Lastly, if you’re looking for a twist on the traditional florals, the hand-painted patterns on the MaxStudio silk chiffon dresses will surely awaken that spring feeling.

The popularity of all things vintage has pushed up the prices

Vintage clothing, and other vintage items are something that has recently become very fashionable and this is something that has been heavily documented in the media. Many people are beginning to ask the question whether vintage items are something that are going to fall out of favour as people realise that they were available much cheaper just a short time ago, and they have only become more expensive because they are fashionable now.

For example, with vintage furniture, many items were available on eBay for less than a pound and now they are selling for £60 and above. It was originally the case that people bought second-hand furniture in order to restore it because they could not afford to buy new. Now people are not buying this furniture because it is cheaper, but because they like the old look of it. It is still possible to find good deals on vintage items but the popularity of it has made this much more difficult.

One of the many appeals about vintage clothing and furniture is that the items are from the past which people typically associate with having higher quality. In recent years however, because people are demanding more vintage items, the term has come to encapsulate anything that even looks old. This can mean that the items being purchased are not good quality, but have simply been artificially distressed in order to make them look vintage.

Oxfam is a charity that has been taking advantage of people’s demand for vintage items. They recently introduced a special vintage section onto their website which allowed people to look for older items. Since doing so, the website have seen their sales increase around 400 percent. The charity recently announced that they have had their highest ever sales week, turning over £4000.

On the back of the success, Oxfam have launched a special store in Manchester which is designed for selling just vintage items. This shop is called Oxfam Originals and it is only selling items which have been confirmed to be old, and not just replicas designed to look older than they are.

Louise Redknapp the face of Wallis’ petite collection

Louise Redknapp, singer, television presenter and wife of footballer Jamie has been names as the new face of Wallis’ petite clothing range. This collection features a wide range of garments that have specifically been designed for those women who have a smaller frame.

Redknapp is a confident and petite woman who understands the importance of dressing to suit your shape, which makes her the ideal ambassador for this petite clothing range from Wallis. Due to her personality and relatability, Redknapp is already somewhat of a style icon, and seeing her adorned by the Wallis collection proves once and for all that being petite doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style.

As one of the UK’s most relatable and friendly media personalities, Redknapp has organically become a style icon for British women. By modelling Wallis’ collection on her petite frame, Redknapp proves that being petite doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style.

As spokesperson, Redknapp modelled several garments from the collection, including lemon jeans, petite dresses and rose printed trousers.

On the shoot set Louise Redknapp said: “When you are petite proportions are so important, whether it’s your jeans or a tailored jacket it’s essential that the fit is good as it makes all the difference.”

Despite usually being considered off-limits for petite women, the maxi dress is also featured in the collection, and it’s altered to flatter the petite frame. These floor-length dresses reflect the recent monochrome trend that’s set to take off in Spring and Summer 2012.

Eveningwear options in the collection include a stylish black jumpsuit and a black body con dress with lace detailing. The collection also features a range of petite tops, including striped petite knitwear pieces.

The Wallis Design team have created unique pieces for the collection, as well as adapting key styles from Wallis’ core collection into petite silhouettes. The collection is designed for women of 5 foot 3″ and under, and is available in sizes 8-18.

The proportions of each garment are altered to flatter the petite figure, while also enhancing seasonal trends. Specifically, leg lengths in the petite collection are shorted to 29 inches and sleeve lengths are reduced by 1 inch.

The collection, as well as accessories to pair with it, is available in all Wallis stores and online at wallis.co.uk

Dior’s new fashion director reveals his vision for the future

The new fashion director at Christian Dior is offering a sober mien and cool, modernist lines to try and restore the French couturier’s previous appeal. The wool-blend sweaters and button-down shirts favoured by the new director is a sharp contrast to Galliano, who once caused an uproar by created a show about homeless people’s clothes and battled with alcohol and drug addictions.

The search for new designers is never simple as it’s important to find someone who has an artistic vision that can be wed successfully with the fashion house history. Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld is revered partly because he managed to introduce leatherwear into his collection but still retained Coco Chanel’s spirit. Simons has the same task, to retain Christian Dior’s belief that women should be decked in tastefully expensive fabric.

Although the connection between Christian Dior’ vision, Simons and the minimalistic work he completed at Jil Sander remains unclear to many, fashion insiders have pointed to Simon’s recent work and noted that it had a distinct, mid-Century Parisian feel.

Simons is facing a huge amount of pressure to perform well, especially since he knows that he wasn’t the first choice. Dior conducted talks with many high-profile candidates such as Marc Jacobs (Louis Vuitton) and Alber Elbaz (Lavin).

The stakes are also high because Christian Dior, which is part of Bernard Arnault’s luxury goods empire, has near enough become LVMH group’s public face. Even though LVMH’s Louis Vuitton brand name accounts for over half of the group’s operating profit, it’s the Dior commercials featuring Charlize Theron disrobing that LVMH is becoming increasingly known for.

LMVH also noted in their annual report that Dior’s haute couture line is vital to Christian Dior perfume sales. The association between haute couture and Christian Dior is important to keep, so Dior’s new designer, Simons, really does have his work cut out for him.

Fashion from flora wows the crowds at the Great Yorkshire Showground

Now that winter is starting to fade away the trees are starting to get their leaves back and even with the rain that comes along in the spring, the flowers are also starting to peak their heads out.

Of course, there were plenty of flowers out this week at the Great Yorkshire Showground, although they were not the type that grows in the front garden. Instead, they were some astounding fashion items that were created with leaves and flowers and presented by some of the top florists in the country.

First to hit the catwalk was a gown created by Sara Collinge that was a mix of roses and orchids primarily with some nice hyacinths and limonium in different hues of purples as an accent. The Queen’s coronation crown was the inspiration for the gown and skeleton leaves were used to create the diamond accents. Sara stated that her idea was to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by reaching back into how elegant the coronation era was.

Also inspiring a gown this year was the London Olympics, as Melanie Garbutt chose to create a leotard in red, white and blue that was made out of calla lilies, astrantia, orchids, muscari, and bear grass.

The flower filled fashion show was held in celebration of the floral art marquee that is due to be the centre of the 2012 Harrogate Spring Flower Show. This week, construction officially began on the marquee that is set to be roughly the size of three large tennis courts and will feature 160 different pieces of art including the clothes fashioned by the above mentioned florists.

Some of the events that will be portrayed in the floral artwork include the tale of Elizabeth the First and Sir Walter Raleigh, the sinking of the Titanic, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
